Ingredients

for preserving basil in salt

  • 200 g salt (without any additives, kosher, Himalayan, sea salt)
  • 2 tbsps of whole fresh clean basil leaves

Tools

Make sure your jars are very clean and odorless!

Directions

Simply follow these steps to make basil preserved in salt :

 

Step 1

Make sure your jar and lid are very clean and do not have any odor. This will ruin from the aromatic basil smell we are trying to preserve!

 

Step 2

Make sure the jar and lid are very dry.

 

Step 3

Start layering, beginning with a layer of salt, layers of ¼ of an inch of salt packing 2 to 3 leaves of fresh basil between each layer.

 

Step 4

Slightly press the layers down as you go and finish the jar with a layer of salt.

 

Step 5

Close the jar and store in cool and dark place, or cover your jars with aluminum foil in order to prevent light from coming in.

Storage

Stores for a year at least. Use to season cold things with and add a hint of fresh basil aroma to your salads/ marinades/soups.
